Expressive Arts Groups

Time for yourself is a luxury you rarely indulge in.

Finding ways to feel less anxiety, and lower levels of stress and overwhelm, is always on your planner for Wednesday afternoon. Yet you don’t see that entry anymore, you haven’t found a way to even know where to start. The laundry and meal prep and leaf raking are always pulling you into forgetting yourself.

Giving yourself two hours every Thursday evening with a group of women just like you who need community and need time to grow their curiosity and feeling of calm is where you can start.

Maybe you’ve just graduated college and don’t want to get stuck working 50 hours a week. Or maybe you’ve just had a baby and don’t have time to pee by yourself.

Or, your children are in school and you find yourself in the car driving to Hockey games and piano lessons and not driving yourself anywhere. Then, the kids have left for college or jobs and the house is too big and quiet and you feel empty and without purpose. Or, you’ve just retired and you don’t know who you are without going to the office everyday.

These are the times for radical self care. These are the times for taking a few hours a week to remember who you are, to find out what you want, to find out what you like.

Expressive Arts Therapy gives you an invitation to be playful and curious; two qualities that get thwarted with trauma, and when you live your life in a state of constant stress.

Bringing yourself to a group of women for four Thursday afternoons where you work with journals, poetry, paper, paint, chalk, glue and collage is like having someone prepare dinner for you and them doing the laundry. It will give you a break, and a glimpse into what lights you up, into what you really don’t like about your life right now, into the joy of being curious about art materials without having to produce something.

You will remember you are a human with needs and goals and curiosities and value.

You will find your heart rate lowers during those two hours, your breath rate lowers, you actually feel your feet and your belly instead of running ahead of your body with your errands and chores. You will feel heard and seen by the other women in the group, you will feel connected. And we all need community. We heal in community.

Try something new, get curious about why you feel this way. Get curious about the way paint feels on paper. Play with words in a journal therapy experiment. These safe experiments give you confidence to try experimenting in your world. These experiments let you feel curious instead of confined. And you will carry this permission to try when you go home.

Healing happens in community
